The Jews of Chalkida were assimilated into Greek society, as noted by traveler Benjamin de Tudela in 1159 that the Jews spoke Greek and had a synagogue. This house of worship is said to have been established in the early Byzantine era, nearly 1,500 years ago, and has since been rebuilt around 6 times<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
