During the Portuguese period (1580 -1640), an interesting character by the name of Sebasti\u00e1n Rodr\u00edguez organized a network of secret Jewish worshipers in Panama. He even established a secret shul on Calafates Street near the Catholic Cathedral in Panama City. The Inquisition dismantled the network in an event called the Great Conspiracy in 1640, driving covert Judaism deeper underground.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sephardic Jews outlasted their Inquisitorial persecutors and the Panamanian Jewish community experienced a gradual resurgence from the 1820s. New immigrants arrived from Europe and the Levant, attracted by economic opportunities and established a secure Jewish community. It\u2019s difficult to define exactly how many Jews there are in Panama today – not least because nobody agrees on the exact definition of Jewishness.
