Though Prague is certainly one of the most popular places to visit, there are other fascinating and historic cities that are famous in their own right. These centuries-old treasure troves of art, architecture, and culture occupy a major place in the country\u2019s history and in the formation of Poland as we know it today. Wroc\u0142aw, Gda\u0144sk and Toru\u0144 are three such cities. These are great tourist destinations, filled with magnificent sites, monuments, museums, and architectural marvels, which will tell you this great country\u2019s ancient story.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wroc%C5%82aw\">Wroc\u0142aw<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Located on the River\u00a0Oder, Wroc\u0142aw was a town of great importance, as it was formed at the intersection of two trade routes. The settlements existed here since the 6th century, and many cultures and religions lived in this area over the centuries. Today,\u00a0Wroc\u0142aw is a very popular city, hosting numerous large events throughout the year. There are many major historical sites to visit. First go to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Centennial_Hall\">the Centennial Hall<\/a>, a World Heritage Site, then to the city\u2019s oldest part, Ostr\u00f3w Tumski, which was once an island known as the Cathedral Island, home to the 10th-century\u00a0Wroc\u0142aw Cathedral.<\/p>\n<p>Take a walk to the 13th-century Main Market Square (Rynek), home to\u00a0the Old Town Hall and the St. Elisabeth&#8217;s Church\u00a0with a 91m tower. Nearby you\u2019ll find the Memorial to Slaughtered Animals. Proceed to the 13th-century\u00a0St. Mary Magdalene Church, then to the burial sites of two Polish monarchs,\u00a0the St. Vincent and St. James&#8217; Church\u00a0and\u00a0the Holy Cross and St. Bartholomew&#8217;s Collegiate Church, but also to the White Stork Synagogue and the Old Jewish Cemetery.<\/p>\n<p>For some museum-touring and relaxation, visit the Royal Palace, Poland\u2019s tallest building called the Sky Tower, the Multimedia Fountain, the Szczytnicki Park\u00a0with\u00a0the Japanese Garden,\u00a0the National Museum\u00a0that houses one of the largest collections of contemporary art in the country, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com\/Attraction_Review-g274812-d10415900-Reviews-Pan_Tadeusz_Museum-Wroclaw_Lower_Silesia_Province_Southern_Poland.html\">Pan Tadeusz Museum<\/a>, City Museum of Wroc\u0142aw, the Museum of Bourgeois Art in\u00a0the Old Town Hall, Museum of Architecture, and if you\u2019re here in June, enjoy the Festival of Good Beer, as well as the Christmas market in winter.<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gda%C5%84sk\">Gda\u0144sk<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Located on the\u00a0Baltic\u00a0coast, on the southern edge of\u00a0Gda\u0144sk Bay, this popular city was erected as a Polish stronghold in the 980s. While it was under different rules throughout its history, Gda\u0144sk was also a royal city of Poland. The city&#8217;s 17th-century fortifications are an official national\u00a0Historic Monument. Among numerous landmarks here, you\u2019ll find\u00a0the National Museum,\u00a0the Gda\u0144sk Shakespeare Theatre,\u00a0the Museum of the Second World War, the Gda\u0144sk Shakespeare Festival, as well as one of Europe\u2019s largest cultural and trade events, dating back to 1260,\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/St._Dominic%27s_Fair\">the St. Dominic&#8217;s Fair<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The city is home to the buildings from the 14th century, as well as the Royal Route \u2013 a pedestrian road and a former path of processions for visiting Kings of Poland, with elaborate city gates and buildings reconstructed in historical style. While there, you\u2019ll see the picturesque Long Lane and the 17th-century Royal Chapel.<\/p>\n<p>There you\u2019ll also find the Long Market with its famous early 17th-century Neptune&#8217;s Fountain\u00a0and the 14th-century Artus Court. Next stop is the Highland Gate, followed by a host of landmarks, including the Torture House and Prison Tower, the Golden Gate, the Green Gate, the Uphagen&#8217;s House, the Lion&#8217;s Castle, and the Main Town Hall.<\/p>\n<p>Follow that up with some of the celebrated historical churches, including\u00a0St. Catherine&#8217;s Church\u00a0and\u00a0St. Mary&#8217;s Church\u00a0\u2013 the world\u2019s largest brick church, built in the 15th century. Outside the historical city center, you\u2019ll find more phenomenal sites, such as the Abbot&#8217;s Palace\u00a0, the Oliwa Cathedral, the Westerplatte, the Wis\u0142ouj\u015bcie Fortress, and the Gda\u0144sk Zoo.<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toru%C5%84\">Toru\u0144<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>The birthplace of astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, situated on\u00a0the Vistula,\u00a0Toru\u0144 is one of Poland\u2019s oldest and one of Europe\u2019s most beautiful cities. The first settlement was built here in the 8th century, and the Teutonic Knights expanded it in the 13th century. Like Gda\u0144sk and Wroc\u0142aw, Toru\u0144 too has been the home of people of diverse backgrounds and religions.<\/p>\n<p>Its magnificent architecture encompasses various styles, from Brick Gothic over Mannerism to Baroque. Luckily, during WWII, the city wasn\u2019t bombed, so the Old Town, its iconic marketplace, and the original structures situated there have been fully preserved. The medieval part of the city is a World Heritage Site and one of Seven Wonders of Poland.<\/p>\n<p>While here, make sure to visit the celebrated\u00a0Museum of Gingerbread, then go to the stunning 14th-century<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toru%C5%84_Cathedral\"> Toru\u0144 Cathedral<\/a> and the 14th-century\u00a0Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist and John the Baptist, which features superb Gothic sculptures and paintings, Renaissance and Baroque epitaphs and altars, and Poland\u2019s largest medieval church bell,\u00a0Tuba Dei.<\/p>\n<p>After that, visit the Toru\u0144 Castle \u2013 the remnants of the 13th-century Teutonic Knight\u2019s castle, the iconic 14th-century <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com\/Attraction_Review-g274854-d284831-Reviews-St_Mary_s_Church-Torun_Kuyavia_Pomerania_Province_Central_Poland.html\">St. Mary&#8217;s Church<\/a> and St. James&#8217;s Church (often called St Jacob&#8217;s Church), the Leaning Tower, the Toru\u0144 Fortress, the Toru\u0144 Regional Museum, the House of Nicolas Copernicus Museum,\u00a0the Zoo and Botanical Garden, and a lot more.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to the amazing Poland \u2013 home of many world\u2019s wonders.
